Deacon

The truck bumped along the back road that ran out of town, past Bayou Beauties, and ended in a thick clump of woods, in a large open meadow where we gathered for pack meetings. We preferred meeting outside, no matter the weather. Sometimes people’s tempers got the best of them, and it was better to be out in the open where nothing could get smashed.

Word had gone out, calling a pack meeting, and everyone would be waiting for us in the clearing. Just the idea of all those questioning faces — never mind the outright hostile ones, like Tate — made my stomach feel like lead. It was a feeling that had only been getting worse as the day went by.

Mind you, as miserable as I felt, when we passed the turnoff to BBs, the open parking lot and the gate just visible through the trees, Logan looked about ready to throw himself out of the truck. His fingers clenched his jeans, twitching and flexing uncontrollably. At least he had control of himself enough not to shift.

I sighed. I hadn’t thought about his feral problem all day. And now was not the time to start. I had way bigger issues at hand.

To be fair to Logan, he’d been great all day, helping Howie and Mick look for papers, and keeping everyone fed and watered as we see-sawed between manic productivity and absolute misery.

“Hey,” I said, glancing at him out of the corner of my eye. “Thanks for coming with me tonight. And being generally great today. I really … I really appreciate it.”

His clenched fingers loosened, and he smiled at me. “I barely did anything,” he replied, shrugging. “I’m just sorry I’m adding more stress to your situation.”

“You’re not,” I said. “You’re—” I wanted to say more, but we’d arrived at the meeting place, and it was packed with cars. I’d forgotten how many of us there were.

My stomach twisted, and I fought back the urge to turn around and drive away. If I wanted to be the leader of the Calibury pack — and I did — I needed to man up. Now.

Logan looked around as I parked and let out a low whistle. “I didn’t realize there were so many of you,” he said.

“I’d been trying to forget,” I replied, unable to hide my grimace.

“Hey,” he said, looking me full in the eyes. “You’ll do great. Your father trusted you to lead this pack, and he wouldn’t have done that if he hadn’t thought you could.”

“Thanks,” I answered, wishing I had his conviction. But, to be honest, it did help a little. My father wouldn’t have had any problem choosing someone else as his successor.

Feeling a little better, I pushed open my door and jumped to the ground — only to get slammed up against my truck, Tate’s ugly mug jammed closed to mine.

“Where’s your old man?” he asked gruffly. “What’s up with this mystery pack meeting, anyway?”

We’d decided not to tell anyone anything until the meeting. Otherwise, it would give people like Tate time to spread dissent before the meeting even started.
